Artist's Description
Here we have a photograph taken in 1942. It features an early model of the B-17 flying fortress named "Off Limits" and her 9 man crew including my father pictured on the far right, front row. He served as the ball turret (belly) gunner. This aircraft was based and flew out of the great country of England. She was part of the U.S. Amrys` 8th air corps. In early 1943 the plane was shot down by Geman fighter planes over Anzio Italy. Only 3 members of the crew, including my father, parachuted to safety and were subsequently taken prisoners by the Nazis and spent the duration of the war in captivity. The other crew members of the Off Linits were killed. These men earned the title of "the greatest generation" and they earned it the hard way.
About Dave Farrow
It is with a very heavy and sad heart that I must inform you of Dave's passing on November 13th 2018. He loved being part of this site with all of his heart. He enjoyed reading and responding to all his comments and making comments to his other artists buddies as well. I just wanted to make sure you all know why he is not responding to your comments. Not only have I lost my husband of 40 years, my best friend, my soul mate but the world has lost a wonderful person, artist and soul as well. Sincerely, Lorraine Farrow Don`t let the bio photograph scare you. Seven other veterans and myself grow pony tails to donate to wigs for kids with cancer. Seven of the eight vets either have or have survived cancer. I have survived 10 years after...

Dave, Dave, just wow, to have this photograph of all these brave men including your Dad is just amazing. Your father and all those who served in WWII definitely earned their title of the greatest generation - Not enough credit is given to these men and also to you and those who served with you in Vietnam - I am a year older than you so I thank you for your service and hope your paintings bring you some semblance of inner peace. I can tell you they certainly bring joy to my eyes.
Dave Farrow replied:

Dave, I have great admiration for those who flew in the B-17s. For some reason I get all choked up when I think about the crews who were lost in these planes - tremendous losses . . . but without these men and planes we probably would not have won.
Dave Farrow replied:
Matt, bless you and thank you so much

Dave, this is such an interesting vintage photograph, which is very nicely processed! I also read your description with avid interest. So glad your father survived his ordeal or we would not have you, Dave, to add so much beauty to the world. My father was an aviator, too. by chance! He flew the Hellcat in the South Pacific. Yes, theirs was indeed the 'great generation'! l/f
Dave Farrow replied:
Elizabeth dear, thank you so very much. I salute your father

Hi Hans and Dave, I hope so too, alas - past and present human behavior show that we humans never seem to be able to learn from history. :-(

Indeed DAVE, we owe great thanks to the Brits, Churchill, the multi-national Spitfire pilots; all those heroes who never gave in to the Hitler menace...
