Description
Tuscarawas county, Ohio, is rich in early history. Located within the county is the Moravian missionary village of Schoenbrunn founded on May 3, 1772. It was built on land given to the settlers by the Deleware Indian chief Netawatwes, This was the second white settlement west of the Ohio River. Its` leader, the Reverend David Zeisberger brought Christianity to the wilderness and converted the local Deleware Indian tribes. Many of the Indian converts lived among the whites in this village. The Moravians were pacifists and some outsiders questioned their neutrality. Due to chaos and turmoil among the colonies at the time, the village was abandoned on April 19, 1777. Its` inhabitants moved west to the village of Coshocton.
